Services. 2026-07-06 10:22:57 - Paul D. Foy - Harvesting Here you will find a picture of Jostaberries harvested from my allotment. I've commented last year on Jostaberries on LinkedIn but I think it's worthy of a comment here because it's an interesting crop. It's a cross between a blackcurrant and a gooseberry and I think it's a hybrid of German origin originally. I'm not too sure about that. I think I mentioned it on LinkedIn. The economics of it are interesting. This amount is about 2 kg, I think, although I haven't weighed it this time, and it took just over an hour to process. You can't buy Joster Berries at all; they're not available in the retail but blackcurrants are perhaps retailing for about £15 a kg. This is £30 worth with one hour's labour at the minimum wage. It just about supports it. Say you double the minimum wage for commercial purposes, £25 an hour, it costs to employ somebody. At £12. 50 it is just about break even so it's an interesting crop. The (large) bush takes up about 4 square metres of land. I don't think it can be harvested mechanically very easily because of the nature of it. It's also interesting from my point of view in that it seems more immune to birds. They don't seem to attack it too much. The fruit is born very awkwardly for birds to eat it. It's quite a good time at the allotment at the moment. It's been quite a successful season so far and things are coming to fruition quite well. I have to say that I'm overjoyed in that after six years of almost total abstinence I'm going to get a pea harvest this year. It's looking very good indeed. I shall certainly comment on that and show you a photograph of that when it is available. 2026-07-06 10:33:10 - Paul D.
